The Himalayas contain eight of the ten highest mountains on Earth and offer some of the most dramatic trekking on the planet. You do not need to be an elite mountaineer — dozens of well-established trails are accessible to fit and determined beginners.

The Annapurna Circuit in Nepal is widely considered one of the world's greatest treks. Completing the full circuit takes 14 to 21 days, moving through subtropical forests, terraced rice paddies, and over the Thorong La pass at 5,416 metres.

Altitude sickness is the primary risk. Ascend slowly — never sleep more than 500 metres higher than the previous night above 3,000 metres. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, and be willing to descend if symptoms appear.
