The Maldives is arguably the finest scuba diving destination on Earth. Its warm, crystal-clear waters offer visibility up to 30 metres, and the marine biodiversity is extraordinary — whale sharks, manta rays, reef sharks, sea turtles, and kaleidoscopic coral gardens are regular encounters.
The best diving is in the outer atolls, away from the heavily developed resort islands. Liveaboard dive boats allow you to access remote sites and dive multiple times each day. Popular routes include the Northern Atolls, the Southern Atolls, and the central Ari Atoll.
The best time to dive depends on which side of the islands you visit. The dry northeast monsoon (November to April) brings clear seas to the eastern atolls. The southwest monsoon (May to October) is better for whale shark encounters.
