Kyoto is unlike anywhere else on earth. As Japan's former imperial capital for over a thousand years, the city holds more than 1,600 Buddhist temples, 400 Shinto shrines, and 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Walking its streets feels like stepping through centuries of history.
The most iconic neighbourhoods are Gion — famous for its preserved machiya townhouses and geisha culture — and Arashiyama, with its bamboo groves and Tenryuji temple. Visit the Fushimi Inari Shrine early in the morning to walk the thousands of vermilion torii gates before the crowds arrive.
Spring brings Kyoto's famous cherry blossoms. The best spots for hanami are Maruyama Park, the Philosopher's Path, and the grounds of Kiyomizudera Temple. Autumn is equally spectacular with vivid red and gold maple foliage across the temple gardens.
